He saves her – just in time for them all to be rounded up by Wilson's goon squad. Nothing more than a mild opiate, it turns out, which is why she's been tripping out with visions of the dead translator Marius. With just four days worth of Thoraxin pills left, Becky is desperate, looking for a dignified way out Ian remembers that they've been hanging out with Anton (aka a genius scientist) and asks him to try to figure out what she's been taking. Revenge was enough of a reason, after all. It's not the only showdown in the episode: Dugdale piles into Geoff in a field, Grant gets an earful from Mrs Dugdale (and then does the dishes all by himself) and Wilson chucks a spoon at Lee – before shooting him. "We're not killers"įor all his insistence that killing isn't an option, it's Ian who stops Terrence with a bullet, saving the world (for now) in a car park. He didn't get to keep his "shitty life" after all. After years of burger-flipping, Terrence is on a roll, dispatching another agent whose cover is a fishmonger (love the yellow kippers), chucking a radio into a bath (what kind of a sicko eats lemon curd in the tub?) and then pulling off an ingenious assassination by pouring petrol into a police cell to set Dobri Gorski on fire. In one of those scenes that Utopia does so well, Terrence really makes the most of his mission, menacing a mum who's trying to do her bit for the environment by taking the coach to Europe instead of flying. The secondary protocol is in place – release immediately – and the hunt is on to try and track down the chosen sleeper agent. "Nothing wastes carbon like a first world human" You just need the fear of a pandemic: a refined version of the idea, mutating, just like a virus. You don't need a pandemic to convince people to take the vaccine, he tells Michael. He's listened to the arguments, drunk the Network kool-aid, and now he's signing up wholesale, fully committed, as he carves the Chinese character for "rabbit" into his chest: a bloody signature on the Janus contract, just like the Assistant before him. With Milner gone, Wilson Wilson steps into her position - he's a true believer. We see how someone like Milner could dedicate their life to doing whatever is necessary to make it happen – a mixture of secret agent cool and years of heartbreak how a genius like Carvel/Anton could be driven mad by the idea and how it could keep spreading out, warping the lives of his children Jessica and Arby, and then infecting people like Ian, Becky, Grant and Wilson, drawn to the idea of a cool comic with its whacked-out paranoid vision of the world, and then finding their lives thrown off kilter by a reality that's far darker (or should that be brighter?). If the first series was about revealing the Network's ruthless plan, this second has had time to really milk the concept of global population control, to explore how and why they'd put it in motion. Somewhere in this final episode, I started to wonder if the real virus wasn't so much the Janus pathogen hidden in canisters in secret locations around the country, but the very idea of Janus itself. Told that Jessica will be tortured if he fails to cooperate Philip hides the virus inside her and sends her to safety whilst retreating to a psychiatric hospital.Mr Rabbit is dead. Five years later Milner and the assistant are desperate for Philip to give them the formula, in the process killing politicians to whom he has turned for help and influencing the general election. At the same time his wife dies giving birth to Jessica. He begins manufacture but is appalled when Milner and her assistant kill the co-workers to ensure their silence, along with Milner’s mentally dependant husband Tom. At a thinkers’ convention Philip meets a young woman called Milner, who is impressed by his view that the world is over-populated and who introduces him to an influential group who encourage him to create Janus, a virus which will suppress procreation. 1974: In an England beset by strikes and shortages young scientist Philip Carvel is father to the seriously reticent toddler Pietre – who will one day become Arby – and conducts a macabre experiment with a pet rabbit in an unsuccessful attempt to get a response from the child.

I discovered that being a judge is hard! There were time when the four judges were yelling at each other and crying (on and off camera too!) because we could not agree on a decision. Their stories are inspiring and their creativity blew us all away.ĬF: Were there any challenges you ran into as a judge?ĪK: I thought being a judge would be easy because it would be obvious who had the best looks and the most interesting collections. Then the first day I met the designers and suddenly I had to let go of my silly ego and remember that this show is about THEM! I am so excited for people to see this show and meet these incredible designers. Leading up to the show I spent a lot of time worrying if I was going to be good enough as a judge and worrying about what I would wear, my hair, make-up and vain stuff like that. Watching this show you cannot help falling in love with all of them. They were between the ages of 13-17 and all from totally different parts of the country. On camera she is witty and sharp and off camera she is both of those things AND very thoughtful about everyone around her.ĬF: What is your favorite part about being a judge?ĪK: My favorite part of being a judge is working with the designers. On the last day of filming, she brought in massage therapists for the crew to each get massages. She is beyond funny and caring, the designers were of course OBSESSED with her. Kelly is the judge who I sat next to all season. People love him because that is truly who he is! Christian is our judge who gives honest feedback and sometimes a bit of “tough love” to the designers when needed. He is 100 percent invested and passionate about the creative development of each designer. Tim Gunn is the mentor, and I think the superstar of all things Project Runway. How was the dynamic on-set? What do you think you each brought to the table?ĪK: Hannah Davis, our host and a judge, is open, approachable and, of course, gorgeous. She didn’t say what it was for… very mysterious! (Actually, come to think of it, one of the videos I sent was my CollegeFashionista interview.) The Producers of Project Runway: Junior picked me based on those videos and when I found out, I was totally nervous and intimidated! I’ve done on-camera interviews, but I have never done a full season of a TV show! I am always up for a new challenge, so I was very excited to be picked and I knew the other judges would be great to work with!ĬF: Speaking of the other judges, you get to work alongside Fashionista Kelly Osbourne, model Hannah Davis and Project Runway alum Christian Siriano. Now you can add “Judge on Project Runway: Junior” to your list of accolades! What drew you to this project specifically?Īya Kanai: My boss, Joanna Coles, one day asked me to email her video clips of on camera work I had done. In anticipation of the series premiere this Thursday, we caught up with Aya as she shared her excitement of being a judge, some behind-the-scenes photos and what we can expect this season on Project Runway: Junior.ĬollegeFashionista: You have an incredible rèsumè-editor, fashion director, stylist. The catch? All the talented designers are ages 13-17!Įach week, CollegeFashionista will be bringing you exclusive content and interviews with contestants. This new season of the series is all about showcasing the talents of up-and-coming designers in a fashionable competition. Now, the current Executive Fashion Director at Cosmopolitan and Seventeen can add a new accolade to her list-judge.Īya is one of the judges on the new Lifetime series, Project Runway: Junior. But by the time I was finished, I was a lace knitter. It included lace patterning both sides, and also a knitted on edging that I needed to graft together. It had a lace center and then needed stitches picked up all the way around. I fell in love with a Shetland style square shawl, so I decided to do it. I jumped into the deep end for sure! It was my first time using laceweight yarn and also the first time I’d actually done lace. Romi: I’d have to say it was the first shawl I knit. □ What is the most challenging thing that you have knit to date? Loopy: No socks? Out of all of your pages of designs, I just see just a handful of sock patterns (plus leg warmers and boot toppers.) So that makes sense. That’s a difficult one, because whatever I’m about to knit is my favorite thing! I think I have to go with my least favorite instead. What is your favorite type of item to knit? Those pretty yarn colors are probably what caught your eye early on. Loopy: It’s fun that your family was already into yarn and crocheting. I was completely in love with the look of stockinette stitch. She taught me to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Romi: Hi Loopy – thanks for having me! I’ve been a knitter for OMG 46 years! I was born into a crocheting family and I finally convinced my mother to teach me how to knit when I was 9. How long have you been a knitter, and who taught you to knit? Loopy: Hi Romi! Thanks for being in our Spotlight today. I hope you have fun getting to know more about her! (Pattern links go to Ravelry.) Years after their first release, serials gained new life at "Saturday Matinees", theatrical showings on Saturday mornings aimed directly at children. Įurope had its own serials: in France Victorin-Hippolyte Jasset launched his series of Nick Carter films in 1908, and the idea of the episodic crime adventure was developed particularly by Louis Feuillade in Fantômas (1913–14), Les Vampires (1915), and Judex (1916) in Germany, Homunculus (1916), directed by Otto Rippert, was a six-part horror serial about an artificial creature. There appear to be older serials, however, such as the 1910 Deutsche Vitaskop 5 episode Arsene Lupin Contra Sherlock Holmes, based upon the Maurice LeBlanc novel, and a possible but unconfirmed Raffles serial in 1911. Serials were a popular form of movie entertainment dating back to Edison's What Happened to Mary of 1912. Four silent Tarzan serials were also made. Several independent companies (for example, Mascot Pictures) made Western serials. Other major studios of the silent era, such as Vitagraph and Essanay Studios, produced serials, as did Warner Bros., Fox, and Universal. Ruth Roland, Marin Sais, and Ann Little were also early leading serial queens. Another popular serial was the 119-episode The Hazards of Helen made by Kalem Studios and starring Helen Holmes for the first forty-eight episodes then Helen Gibson for the remainder. Notable American serials of the silent era include The Perils of Pauline and The Exploits of Elaine made by Pathé Frères and starring Pearl White. The hero and heroine would face one trap after another, battling countless thugs and lackeys, before finally defeating the villain. The villain would continually place the hero into inescapable deathtraps, or the heroine would be placed into a deathtrap and the hero would come to her rescue. Serials were action-packed stories that usually involved a hero (or heroes) battling an evil villain and rescuing a damsel in distress. The Flash Gordon serial and its sequels, for instance, were major productions in their times. Although most serials were filmed economically, some were made at significant expense. Many serials were Westerns, since those were the least expensive to film. There were films covering many genres, including crime fiction, espionage, comic book or comic strip characters, science fiction, and jungle adventures. Movie serials were especially popular with children, and for many youths in the first half of the 20th century a typical Saturday matinee at the movies included at least one chapter of a serial, along with animated cartoons, newsreels, and two feature films. Viewers had to return each week to see the cliffhangers resolved and to follow the continuing story. Usually, each serial involves a single set of characters, protagonistic and antagonistic, involved in a single story, which has been edited into chapters after the fashion of serial fiction and the episodes cannot be shown out of order or as a single or a random collection of short subjects.Įach chapter was screened at a movie theater for one week, and ended with a cliffhanger, in which characters found themselves in perilous situations with little apparent chance of escape. JSTOR ( August 2012) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message)Ī serial film, film serial (or just serial), movie serial, or chapter play, is a motion picture form popular during the first half of the 20th century, consisting of a series of short subjects exhibited in consecutive order at one theater, generally advancing weekly, until the series is completed.Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Once we received the full roll and hung it up on the wall we think this print quality is intentional to make the tile pattern look more realistic from a distance (though it won’t fool anyone up close). We had initially noticed that the two pattern samples we received were inconsistent in print quality, looking blurry at close range. After being up for 6 months we peeled it back and did not notice any residue left behind or stripping of the paint, despite not prepping or cleaning the wall beforehand and hanging it over old paint (which is very prone to stripping). Once we received the full roll, we put it up in a very hot part of the house with no special smoothing tools-it went on smoothly and was easy to apply. Both the Eco and Anywhere samples we received passed performance tests in the bathroom and laundry room. The company offers peel-and-stick in two materials: a vinyl wallpaper (Anywhere), designed to remove cleanly from matte paint, and a vinyl-free wallpaper (Eco), intended for all paint finishes except matte paint. If you want an affordable, non-PVC wallpaper in vintage-inspired patterns: Astek Home stood out for its selection of unique and vintage-inspired styles. Unlike many wallpaper brands, Tempaper offers returns (minus a restocking fee). And even though vinyl can be prone to creasing if it’s handled too much, we found it was possible to reposition and correct for mistakes when we worked in small sections during installation. Tempaper comes in a range of finishes, from matte-smooth with a slight sheen to metallic (depending on the style), and the print quality was crisp and consistent across samples. (The company recommends applying Tempaper with a squeegee, to reduce the chance of any lifting and bubbling.) We still think Tempaper is a decent choice, especially if you want lots of styles to choose from (there are 265 patterns, a number of which are collaborations with designers). But we subtracted points for ease of application, as well as the fact that one of the panels we applied in the kitchen lifted in one corner after a couple of very hot weeks (though this may be because it was located a couple feet from a stove). Once installed, the samples we tested did not have the cheap, plasticky look of contact paper, as some vinyl wallpapers can. If you want a wallpaper that you can view in a store before buying: Tempaper, a vinyl peel-and-stick option that came close to making our list of picks, is widely available at brick-and-mortar retailers, as well as online, so you can check it out in person. The patterns we tested were Baby Blue Lemons wallpaper, Sunny Delicate Scallop Print wallpaper in Yolk & Off White, and Greek Terrazzo wallpaper in Multicolor. This paper is also pricier than our two main picks, but we think the quality is worth it. And this one can be especially hard because of its thinness and strong adhesive you may want to consider calling a capable friend or hiring someone to help. All wallpapers can be relatively tricky to install by yourself. This quality might also make it more likely that the wallpaper could peel paint in rooms with intense climatic conditions (rooms that get very hot or very humid) or with older paint. But the strong hold also makes it harder to correct mistakes during installation, compared with other papers we tested. The adhesive has a very strong hold, which all but guarantees the wallpaper will stay up for years to come. It is the only textile-based peel-and-stick wallpaper we tested that is Oeko-Tex–certified, which may give some people peace of mind. Its fine-webbed, non-vinyl woven material is extremely lightweight and has a refined, matte look once installed. We were impressed by Livette’s Wallpaper’s excellent print quality and designs in more than 300 patterns. Once this happens, they then form into two daughter cells.
