SA2 made a lot of these playstyles clunkier.įor its time I think SA1 was as close to good of a translation to 3D Sonic as you could get, despite much of its jankiness being exposed through the seams. SA2 I still remember the incredible Knuckles level where you are in space and get shot to different shaped Planetoids like Mario Galaxy, or the Sonic stage where you alter gravity to run on the walls/ceiling, or City Escape (played that one probably a hundred times or more).Īdventure 1 does more interesting things with Sonic's physics, and its alternate play styles are generally still designed in a way that emphasizes the element of speed whether it be speedrunning Sonic stages with a flight ability, exploring Sonic stages with the superior emerald radar, the Amy chase sequences where you gain more height in your jumps the faster you're running, the Gamma shooter stages which are super flighty and on a timer, most of the play styles are still enjoyable (with the exception of Big who's just completely different from the others). Only other thing I remember is Eggman having an airship and the lame water monster that keeps getting bigger. Nothing else left a lasting impression unless it was because of how bad it was (like the hub areas). SA1 has that first whale level but that's literally the only level I remember from the whole game. The story was ridiculous in a good way, and it had so much replay ability with all the different graded challenges in every level, but I never did unlock Green Hill Zone :( SA2 I loved the Chao garden, I had fun with the Kart Racer, in really liked the the Sonic+Shadow levels, I had fun with the simple Tails+Eggman levels, and I appreciated the level design in a lot of the Knuckles+Rogue levels (didn't love the treasure hunt objectives, hut they were still some impressive levels that were fun to explore. It probably didn't help that I played Sonic Adventure 2 first (came out first on Gamecube, SA1 came later), so pretty much everything felt like a downgrade when I played SA1. Without a guide it just seemed impossible to figure out where you were supposed to go next. I hated the explorable hub areas in Sonic Adventure 1, and those are usually my favorite parts of platformers (Mario 64 castle, Gruny's lair in Banjo).
